I have a 45 that is just fired up for the first time in about 30 years, and I am trying to figure out a way to fix the knotters. It looks like it it is not cutting the twine, so all i get is just a giant birds' nest in the way bottom of the mechanism. I think if i could just get it to cut, i would be on my way to making bales. Any ideas on adjustments would be a big help as well.

I've got a service manual for the International 45 baler. However it's about 230 miles north of me right now and I'm not sure when I'll be going back up. I could bring it back down here, scan some of it and send to you if you're not in a big hurry.

Hi, 45 years ago I worked on the the 45 knotters a lot. First suggestion is buy 2 new twine knives and adjust per manual. If it still does not work after that write back telling us the following and this is like the trouble shooting guide in the IH manual:
1)Are both knotters doing the same thing?
2)Was twine long enough to go around bale or was it to short ? If no, then twine is slipping out of twine disk.
3)Is there 1 tied bow and the other end has a ragged cut on the twine? Bad twine knife or slipping out of twine disk.
4) Twine wrapping around bill hook? Bad knife or twine breaking before knot is tied.

IH used to sell a modification to the 46 knotter that was called a 'twine keeper' that was an additional formed piece of spring metal that mounted under the twine knife and extended to the back of the twine disk where it applied pressure on the twine on the backside of the twine disk. This prevented the twine from slipping out of the twine disk. The major cause of twine slipping out of the disk was poor quality twine with thick and thin spots in it. See if this same mod is available for 45 baler.

Good luck
JB

Get a operators manual and follow the procedures in ther. Dad had one, and everything has to be set right for it to work, and you have to use the best twine yo can get, not the cheapstuff. On thing to do first is to sharpen the twine knives. Also, dad oiled the little rollers that the twine comes through on the twine boxes, BIG mistake.Do not oil them, needs the tension on the twine. Other than that, I didn't mess with it much. When it was working right, it did a good job. Oner more thing, keep it running up to speed, does not like to run slow.

The 45 is like the 46 like than I have. If it is not cutting the twine, the twine knifes may be dull or out of adjustment. Also check to see if there is tension on the twine to hold it tight so it can be cut by the twine knife. If it is loose the twine will over run the needles and will not be tight enough to be cut. That adjustment is in the twine box. Also check the clearance between the twine disks and clearers.

JB has hit most all the main points on getting it to knot and here are a couple more. I found that good twine that was left in the twine boxes over the winter would also cause problems. The other thing I did was polish the knotter bills. A rusty knotter would cause the twine to shred and start to build up the threads on the shaft that then had to be cut off. So at the end of the season I would take out the twine and store it in sealed plastic bags. I would also put a coating of grease on the knotters and put another plastic bag around the knotter and seal with rubber band. To work on the knotter or put on the bag you should remove the bottom bolt that secure it to the frame at the base. Once removed the knotter will swing up for easier access. I also stoned the knifes at the beginning of the season and also remove all the grease from the knotters before starting out.
