I am starting to restore a 1949 Super A. What is the best combination of primer and IH red paint and where do you get it? Also, same question for the silver paint for the wheel rims?

Thanks for the help.

PPG makes an "inexpensive" line of paints called Omni. DuPont and Sherwin Williams have their versions. For PPG you need MP 170, which is an epoxy primer + MP 175 catalyst; a primer surfacer (I use MP182 + hardener) and about a gallon of 70019, which is IH 50 equivalent. You can get acrylic enamel with or without hardener, or acrylic urethane which must have hardener. If you use hardener you need a supplied air system. The MP 107 + catalyst only requires a twin cartridge mask, and should be used regardless of whether the primer surfacer and topcoat are hardened. The paint, hardener, and reducer will set you back approximately $300, if you buy a supplied air system, another $500 or so. Or you can buy Case-IH 2150 synthetic enamel (old paint chemistry) and their primer for less than 1/3 of the PPG price. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. This has been discussed extensively on the paint and bodywork forum, and can be found in the archives. There are several paint forums, a good one is www.paintucation.com.

If you are just going to use implement paint, then buy it from your IH dealer, both primer and top coat, but if you are going to go thru all the work prepping the machine, for a few more bucks, depending on the system used, you can have a nice urathane paint job that will outlast you.
