Won't run on regular

A farmer friend of mine has several gas farmall tractors - Cubs, Super A, Straight A, 140, etc. All his tractors will run on regular gas with the exception of his two 140's. When he puts regular in them, they spit, sputter, lose power, etc. He said when gas was leaded they would run on regular but now with unleaded gasoline, we has to run premium in them. Any ideas on why all his other Farmalls will run on regular gas but the 140's won't? Thanks

The 140 is the highest compression. Pull a spark plug on the Super A and the 140, and look at the difference in the top of the pistons. Unless the Super A has firecraters in it you should see a real difference.
That said, I would still expect the 140 to be able to run on regular though. Might check if timing is advanced further on the 140 or if it's running hotter plugs?

Owners manual that came with our '79 140 says it should be run on premium gas. But it runs fine on regular!
