When the tractor is running, I've noticed a slow drip from the shaft of the water pump. I'm no expert, but I believe a seal is going bad. Before I dig into it, I'd appreciate your opinions on what to look for or what I may need to do. New seals? new water pump? what's a pump cost? Thanks in advance for the help.

Check your local Napa store. They can probably "have it for you in the morning!" Rebuilding one is probably more trouble than it's worth. Checked the shop manual a while back, and it looked a lot like work. I've changed out one on my 200 recently, and it's not difficult. Check the posts below for additional information. work in good light, and be sure to get the two bolts that hold pump on motor, and not those holding pump together. (No big deal, if you get the wrong bolts, but why?)

Thanks for the comments and help. It sounds like you guys are recommending that I replace it. That's fine, I've never done this before, but I'm willing to try. I did surf the net for a new pump. I found prices from $85 to $120. I'm going to check with the Case/IH dealers and parts suppliers here in NW Ohio next. Any tricks to putting it in when I do get it?

Pretty simple job to replace the water pump. It's only held on by two bolts, the hose and the fan belt. Best to get some new hose and clamps while you are at it. Hardest part is working around the fan shroud. Also, can't recall for sure, but I think WP is on the same side as the generator, so you have to remove the generator to get to it. Make sure you get a new gasket where the pump mounts to the block too. That gasket is usually part of the package if you buy a new or rebuilt pump. And...make sure the pump includes the pulley or you will be hunting someone with a press to change the pulley.

JT: I am talking Canadian dollars so figures will be 1.5 times higher than US. Kit cost me around $135., wound up taking it to a shop as you need a specific hydraulic press. $25. Total $160. Found out later I could have bought a rebuilt exchange from CaseIH for less money. Needed a pump for another tractor this spring, they didn't have a rebuilt on hand. They sent mine away for rebuilding two days and $80. My advise wear pin stripe bib overalls not a suit, when you go pump shopping.

Probably best to just get a new water pump. You can rebuild it, but expense will be nearly as much and rebuilding is not really a job for a home shop. To get the best job you will need a bearing press to do it right, as the bearing and pulley are press fits. Also rebuilt pumps are available and you can exchange your old one for a few dollars.

I had to put one on my Super C last Dec. I was told by others on this site that they can be rebuilt but you will have as much in parts and your labor as a new one. Mine cost around $80 I think.

I am having the valves done on the head of a Farmall B at Precision Automotive Diesel here in Rockford, Illinois. Just picked up a gasket set, carb overhaul kit and rod bearings for the Farmall B from them and checked on a water pump for a Super C to install on the B. They said it would be $85 for a rebuilt pump without an exchange. Checked on some used ones and found one for $50 ($40 with exchange which I don't have.) Haven't decided on which way to go.
