49 Farmall H.. No high gear?

I recently purchased a 49 farmall H on an auction.
The high gear (5th gear or road gear), will not stay engaged. If I try to shift and even hold it in the correct location and let out the clutch it will have a gear grinding rattle or noise. What kind of problem am I looking at. I really do not need it, but it would be nice to have.

Thanks BS

More times than not the gear is gone from improper shifting. most of the folks that run the farmalls try to shift on the go with out much luck. it is indeed possible, but you have to know what speed you are travleing and what the throtle level on the next gear would be in order to get teh gears to mesh. also if you have the belly pump ingaged that helps alot. 5th gear is a very common gear to have probelms with because most times whem pulling a load with an H the H does not have the power to make hills so fourth is used than on the go shifted back to 5th which will grind every time.

I agree with Rich, most likely your 4th and 5th speed sliding gear is worn out. Comes from grinding the gears when you shift on the go into 5th. Likely the teeth on the 5th gear part are mostly gone. I've seen this gear after market for around $100. From Case/IH it will be more.

If you need parts, I have one that I am parting out slowly and I am almost down to the transmission.

I worked on these tractors for years and most of the time it's a bad 4th and 5th sliding gear. You have to remove the hydrualic pump and its driver. Then remove the transmission cover and remove the top set of gears to remove the bad one. Replace the seal and shaft bearing at the same time. The last time I bought this gear I believe it cost about $140 for just the gear.

Bob, sound like either a bent shift fork or a worn 5th gear, have to lift cover to find out.
