Have a #4 Little Wonder and am going to paint it. There is a picture in the Implement Gallery of a "1930's IH Little Genius #8 2-14 Plow" by Clyde. A comment for the picture by someone said that it was actually a #4 Little Wonder. If this is the case, I am going to follow his paint scheme. I see that some of the Geniuses and Wonders have a type of rope that goes from somewhere above the left wheel towards the tractor. Anybody know what this is or what it's for. Also, what tire size should I get? I have it on steel wheels now, but want to make it rubber for easy transport. Is the front of the bar black? Also, what color should I paint the molboards as well as the furrow wheel?

Thanks

Justin

If you want to keep your plow original, the plow bottoms, rolling coulters and other parts of implements finished with a high polish are varnished before leaving the factory to prevent rust. I have an original owners manual for this machine with much info if you have some particular question, also have the part number and a picture of each part. this plow could be converted from 2 to 3 or 4 bottoms with the right parts. Book mentions hitching to F-30 and 10-20 also 15-30 andT-20 so I assume it's pretty old. PUTTER

Thanks for the informative reply.
Went to the Wisconsin Historical Society page on paint decisions and have decided to follow their specs. Of course, the bottoms and coulters have been primered and don't have their original luster, so have decided to paint them and iron/silver color to make it comparable to the varnish and finished look you mentioned.

One question. Towards the front of the hitch, there is an adjustable bar that sticks out. It is actually above where the hitch is and goes back to the plow frame (not talking about the trip). If this is considered part of the hitch, am going to paint it black, if not, I'll paint it IH red. The coulter yokes are actually black, although I have seen many paint them blue or red. When painting, I also consider the brace and bolts that mount them to the plow frame part of that part (ex. I will paint the bolts and brace that connect the coulter yoke to the frame black). Thanks

Justin

Thanks for the replies! They were most helpful.

Can't seem to find Harvester Blue. Tried "BMI Blue" that was offered at the local Case dealer. Seems a little too light. Do you think Ford blue will work?

Justin, I'm not sure about your question but my book shows a bar perhaps 1 inch wide with a bend at the end as wide as your hand, this could be rotated up so that your could rehitch the plow without getting off the tractor. It attached under the spings toward the front of the hitch with only one bolt so that it apears you could fold it down along the hitch to put it out of the way. If that is not what you are talking about just post another question and I'll give it another shot. PUTTER

IH 1150 blue = PPG 10067 Dupont 24160 Try going to the Carter and Gruenewald website. They have the implement blue paint in spray cans as well as quarts. It is Van Sickle paint, which I used on my #8 Little Genius. I was pleased how it turned out. Just click on the link.

Check out the Wisconsin Historical Society for paint schemes for plows. As for changing the plow from rubber to steel, it could be difficult. You would at least have to change the hubs on the axles. I'm not saying it couldn't be done. Maybe someone else has more experience with this. "H" and I restored two #8 plows and if you need pictures I would be glad to help out. Hope this helps.

Justin: All Little Wonder plows have either no tail wheel or a fixed tail wheel. All Little Genius plows have a tail wheel that lifts the rear of plow by means of a linkage from tail wheel to the rockshaft of the left front wheel.

I happen to have a little Genius #8 plow. I have a 6.00x15 on mine with the drive being a bar tire from like a front wheel of a kubota compact 4wd tractor except mounted backwards so it grips when you want the plow to come up. My opion is that if i had to do it allo ver again i would use a 6.50x15 tire. The 6.00x15 seems to be to small. My settings are all the way up almost and i still leave like a 5 to 6 in dead furrow. but i also have a brush hog wheel on the back b/c it has been hard to find good rear wheels. I plowed with it this spring and it did pretty good but i still have some bugs to get out yet. Like the other guy said dont tie the rope to anything solid. I found out the hard way on that. Instead of the seat i broke that lever off b/c it got tangled on the tractor and found a solid place to hook. As far a color me and a friend painted the bottoms and frogs blue. The hitch is black. And the rear wheel is The white cream color of international. There is a International blue out there as well. Any other questions as far as color, There is a prescion series toy PLow that should help you on any color questions.

Justin I went and looked at the plow in the pictures they are right it isnt a Little Genius. The Tail is a give away. If you look at a Number 8 the rear wheel can move up and down and left to right. On the wonder it looks like it is fixed. In the Gallery there are 2 pics of the Wonder plow compare the tail ends and see what you got. Any way Good luck on restoration! It is a lot of work but well worth it in the end!

I will only comment on a few points of your chapter of questions,. This is a good place to ask---The rope goes to your clutch of the plow. This is probably a lever type iron sticking up from the left front wheel. By pulling this 1 time it will trip the plow--thus the plow will dig into the ground--stay clear from in front of this left wheel as it will come forward real fast as the plow drops. To lift the plow out of the ground the tractor will have to be in a forward motion and by pulling the rope again it should lift the plow out of the ground. The left front wheel of all pull type trip plows probably should have radical tread as the tire will skid on the ground (only when lifting). A word of caution--when you hook the rope to the seat of the tractor it can not catch on anything or if you turn it could trip the plow. Also the rope ----- -SHOULD-- GO INTO A SMALL LOOP OF VERY SMALL WIRE WHEN ATTACHING TO THE TACTOR. Your plow will unhook from the tractor by some sort of spring loaded hitch on the plow if you hook a buried rock or stump etc. If the rope is tied to your tractor seat without the small wire it would be no different than tying your tractor seat to a tree and driving forward--your seat will be re arranged --that is your seat as well as the tractor seat. This information pertains to most pull type trip plows. Sorry I know little about the model and paint on your plows Dave NE Iowa
