I just started my Farmall B after restoring it. I traded my magneto for a rebuilt one. This rebuilt magneto makes a lot of noise. I have an A with a magneto and it doesn't make noise like this one. It almost sounds like the impulse coupling is constantly engaged as it makes a clattering sound. Is there anything to check or should I just return the mag for another. Roger

Remove the mag and check out the impulse coupling. You can remove the nut and cap and make sure the arms on the back of the pawl plate (you can't look at them directly) are free to pivot and that they're installed correctly. Make sure the cap doesn't have a broken ear. That would allow one of the weights to sling out and contact the dowel pin each revolution. The impulse is designed to release at 150 RPM.

Does it make the noise all the time or just when it is idling, it might be idling to slow. Tim K.

Tim, It makes the noise at all rpm's. The noise is not any louder at higher rpm's, just at a higher frequency. Roger
