The other thing that is different is the front section of the steering column, as I found out trying to find a replacement.

The book spec shows the MD as 1 1/2" longer than the M. The difference is in the length of the engine, and the frame rails are different to make the implement mounting holes on the side line up the same as an M.

I thought the M and MD were the same length. They allow mounting the same implements that mount front to back axle. From my MD it looks like it has the same side rails, but the front engine mount is on the top of the rail instead of by the two bolts through the side of the rail as is with the straight M. You can also mount the same implements on an H. Roger

If you measure your MD side rails and the side rails on an M you will find yours to be longer. Yes, same implements mount on the M and the MD. Apparently IH allowed for this in the implement designs, or the difference is not enough to matter.

MD side rail part numbers

Left Hand 360519 R91
Right Hand 360520 R91

M Side rail part numbers

LH 61329 DD
RH 61330 DD

Parts catalog does not give length. Other differences besides length. The reason for the difference is that the diesel engine is longer than the gas.

The MD is a little longer than the M. The side rails are longer as is the hood. I suppose the steering shaft, and other parts are different as well.
