I just got a trade in that when it runs for more that 5 mins, overheats!!. I drained the radiator and put in approx. 1 gal of water to 2/12 antifreeze. The radiator seems okay. The cap most definitely needs replaced? Do I need to replace the water pump?? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated (is there one?).

Just to add to a couple of the other posts. Pre-mix the anti-freeze prior to pouring into the radiator. Mix it per the manufacturer's instructions. Usually a 50-50 mixture protects to the lowest temperatures. The A has the same block as the C. My C does NOT have a water inspection port on the side of it like the bigger tractors. Removing the radiator hoses and flushing it out good with water will most likely do the trick. With the engine cold you could remove the radiator cap (carefully) and then start it up. You can check the flow of water coming from the upper radiator hose. You can either use a thermometer or your finger to see if it is starting to warm up. Just be careful that you don't burn yourself. Good luck.

Jesse, as what Big Fred said the difference in density of antifreeze and water will inhibit the thermosiphon action. Remove upper an lower hose's flush out block an radiator making sure they are clear of junk. Reg A's do not have water pumps an they work on thermosiphon action which means that the cold water goes to the bottom an the hot comes to the top thus keeping the engine cool. If you are into major engine repair you could pull sleeve's an clean out block that way as well reset sleeve's. But the way it sounds your not into major repair or rebuilding the engine so I'll just recommend a good flushing. Hope this helps only my two cents worth

Your block is probably plugged. It is some work but take the radiator off and then remove the bottom return on the block. Get a good lite and look in there you can take a wire and remove lots of junk and rust using compressed air and water pressure to remove the junk. There are holes between the sleeves that are probably plugged about the size of a nickle by running water in the top inlet you will be able to see if it can run out the bottom. This is hard to explain but these passages get plugged over the years and they are hard to find thru the lower part of the block. but by blowing and probing you will get water to flow thru the block and out the bottom. good luck gene b glad to help you can e-mail any time

Doesn't the A motor have a large water jacket access plate on the left side of the block? Drain the rad. and remove that plate. Doesn't this give easy access to the water jacket aroung the sleeves?

Check your ignition timing. If it's off too much you will get overheating. A good radiator and engine flush will maybe help also. Did you pre-mix the antifreeze and water? If they aren't pre-mixed, they won't circulate. The difference in density of antifreeze and water will inhibit the thermosiphon action.

I know NOTHING of any Farmall w/o a water pump. I am not sure how the thermosiphon system works. I do know that the guy who I got this from, rehabs junk tractors and has done so for 30 years. This is the first A he has had. He normally works with Hs and Ms.

He put a belly mower under this and has turned the governor up. I think the governor was adjusted to give it more power and to compensate for a weak carb.

I just added the antifreeze and then put water into an empty jug. I did not stop to think that it would make a difference.

Does it have a water pump?

If not, it does not need a pressure radiator cap either.

Is the fan belt turning the fan well?

Is the outside of the radiator filled with chaff?

If it has a water pump, is the water flowing well? If not it may just have a stuck thermostat. It should take around five minutes for a cold engine to open the thermostat.

Do you see bubbles from a cracked head?

Is there water in the oil?

It does not have a pressurized cap. I don't see any cracks in the head. It is fairly clean as the guy I got it from attempted to "fix it up".

There is no water pump that I can see.

I would start by just doing a good old flushing of the radiator and block with a garden hose. I did my Super C this way and got a 3 gal. bucket full of straw, bugs, scum and other junk. Runs very cool now. These old tractors where designed to run pretty cool. If that doesnt help then you can get out the wrenchs.

Just started to work on a Super A (1949) I just got. Pulled the radiator, upper and lower hoses and housings.
You would not believe what was in the lower part of the water jacket!!!
Hand fulls of rust and globs of stuff I could not tell the makeup of.
If you want to keep the tractor, pull the hoses at least and do a good flush, from the top.
I will flush mine and run some rust remover thru it, I think. Good luck.

UG!
