My tractor smokes at start up. After it warms up it don't smoke at all. My question is this. Is it the valves, or is it the rings. Thanks in advance

Mark,

Rusty is right on this call. This symptom is almost always valve guides and/or hardened/brittle valve seals.

Combustion & exhaust pressures are keeping the oil back out of the cylinders while the engine is running and therefore you don't notice an oil consumption problem.

Oil leakage around the rings wlll usually show itself upon de-acceleration of the engine. You'll see this as smoke while cutting the throttle from wide open in road gear down to an idle (coasting down in gear).

Just some ideas,

Allan

More than likely it is the valve guides which have become worn, and will allow oil to seep past the valve stem and into the combustion chamber while the engine is shut off. This oil is then burnt when you first start the engine. It is a nuisance, but doesn't really hurt anything.
