I am looking at a Farmall H project tractor (stuck, PTO doesn't work, sitting in the weeds, looks pretty complete), Serial 48976-X6. I make this out to be a 1940, kerosene, low speed gears. I have a couple of questions:
1. If it is a kerosene model (probably low compression), would running it on gas for some number of years adversely affect the engine? If I do sleeves & pistons, can I update it to gas specs? What else would I have to change?
2. What are the ground speeds for the 'low speed gears' compared to 'standard' gears?

Thanks for your help.

Run that old girl on gas!!!! You're not gonna hurt anything. Grandpa ran a kerosene F14 & M on gas for years. Over 20 years for the F14. Never hurt a thing.

The kerosene tractors have a bigger combustion chamber to lower the compression ratio. It won't make quite as much horse power as a gas head, but you can swap heads if you need, or get the current head milled.

If it is a kerosene tractor, it will have a regular gas tank, and a smaller on, probably only a quart or two. This small tank was for gas to start it on, then you'd swap it to kerosene.

Can't help you on the gears though. Send me an e-mail if you need any other info, and I'll try to help.

I think the low speed gears are referring to first gear only, it seems like I remember the parts catalog describing this as being a one mile per hour, or one and one half mile per hour attachment. The rest of the speeds would be the same as any H.
Running this tractor on gasoline for several years would not have hurt it.
the original cylinder head would have been lower compression, but I would not change it unless it turns out that your cylinder head is not useable.
If your tractor still has the kerosene manifold, you might want to change it to the later style, but the tractor will run satisfactorily with the old style.
There are many, many choices when it comes to sleeve and piston kits, any one of them will work in your engine, as long as the kit you choose is listed for your serial number.
What it all boils down to is, an H is an H is an H.

I think the kero engine has a bigger combustion chamber in the head. You could raise compression by using the power pack popup pistons, and thet would help. Running gas on low compression will not hurt anything. It probably helped the bearings and crankshaft.
