Trying to decide whats the best way to fix this.
Its on my 400, well was on my 400 its on my work bench right now. I priced a rebuilt and wow! they must be gold. $200
Heres what it does. When you push the started button the Solenoid kicks in and the motor tuns or at least you hear a reving sound.
The Solenoid Also sticks open. Revs a bit and then finnaly lets loose. It did this for a wile before it wuit all together. 3 or 4 tries and it would catch.
This is the kind that has the Solenoid on the starter and has a actuator arm the moves the starter gear in and out. Never saw one like that.
Whats the poop on these should I tear into it or pony up the $200? Know any goos spots for parts or maybe a rebuilt one?

Kelly, my 450 has the same kind of starter and problem. I got a rebuilt starter from Steel Wheel Ranch for $75 and a solinoid was another $15. I haven't changed them out yet so I can't tell you if it solved the problem. I'm wondering if my ring gear is chewed up also. But it's like yours, you have to bump the starter 3 or 4 times to get it to engage.

Kelly, Just redid my starter on my ol 966. Basicly it is an overgrown Chevy starter. Contact your local IH dealer for a solenoid. I got one priced from them @ a cheaper price than the local auto parts store. $36.00 for one to fit my tractors starter. I will bet that is the problem with yours. While you are in there check the front and back bushings. If they look sloppy loose, Replace! Wash it up with solvent or just plain ol Gasoline. (Be Careful) A little small amt of white lithiun grease on each new bushing,(1/2 a pea size) put it back together. Test it on your 12v. fast charger and you are good to go.
Hope this helps!
Good Luck,
John A.

Kelly, I think by your desciption that you have a Prestolite starter, not a Delco. Take it apart and inspect the innnards, if the armature and case windings are good - Get the bushings, brushes, a bendix, and a new solinoid and get into it. You should be able to rebuild it yourself for about 120.00 if the armature is good, if not add reworking on the armature and you might as well get the rebuilt unit. I do believe that they come without a solinoid for that price. Been there myself, good luck, Van

Kelly remove the cap end of solenoid and turn washer over and clean contact post. While you have it on bench check the brushes. Just might save that 200 and all you are out is a few minutes of your time.

Looks kinda like it. Any decent starter repair shop should rebuild it for a lot less than $200.00.

It sounds like you have a Delco-Remy starter. These are used on all G.M. cars and trucks. If you have a gas engine, your local Chev dealer might be able to fix you up with parts, otherwise it sounds like NAPA. Worth a try? Walt
