Has anyone did the brakes on a Farmall-A? Mine is in desperate need, especially before I get another parade float of Cub Scouts for holiday parades. Not to mention moving trailers and stuff around my property.

I have looked at the manual. I just have never torn into it that much. Is it an afternoon job?

Not an afternoon job unless your a lot better than I am. I just did my BN. You'll most likely need new oil seals for the differential shafts also. On the left side it will leak onto the brakes of they are bad. They are about $12 each at Case IH dealer. Brake bands are $60 each and you will reuse the rods and clevis's. I took tires and wheel weights off each side as I did it. Put my floor jack under the final drive pan and unbolted the final drives or differential shaft housings and wheeled my floof jack back. This is at least a two man job as these castings are heavy and unballanced. Be sure to secure the tractor with jacks, blocks, etc. Be prepared to hammer and pry on the housings to get them apart. On the right side you'll have to take the seat and the floor pan off to change the axil seal Otherwise just unbolting the final drives should get you there. Dave.

Indeed more than an afternoon job !. The brake bands that I ordered from walts tractor parts. Came with new brake rods attached. And he is right you should indeed replace the axle seals that are in the trans housing, and these can be very difficult to get out( at least in my case ) Just to add a little to the other post. Once you get the final drives off inspect your brake drums if they are badly pitted you should remove them and have a machine shop turn them, If they are not pitted and are in good shape, rough them up a bit with same sandpaper. If your changing the axle seals dont forget to drain the transmission oil first or you will have a heck of a mess. Overall the job is not hard , its just time consuming. If you have any other questions or need help drop me an e-mail at (mirgon@ohiohills.com) and I will try to help.
Good luck
