Super M won't start after distributor work

Thought I'd replace the springs in the distributor since the spark advance wasn't working. Now it won't start.

What I did:
- Removed distributor cap.
- Marked a lineup line.
- Removed 2 bolts.
- Pulled out distributor, small amount of hydraulic fluid comes out.
- Took apart distributor, found it oily and gummy down by the weights/springs. Springs very weak. Took out points and condenser when I didn't need to (DOH!).
- Got new springs ($26 ouch).
- Used carb cleaner to get grunge off all parts.
- Several hours later kicked myself for not taking photos so I knew how to reassemble for sure.
- Put things in like I remembered, put points spring and condenser wire on the bolt. (that right?)
- Reassembled, set points to about .020".
- Found the carb cleaner removed my lineup mark.
- Installed distributor close to where I think it was.
- Turned engine to where TDC mark lined up with the pointer.
- Rotated the distributor until #1 plug sparks.
- Tighten down distributor, install plugs verifying order.
- Try to start.

It seemed like it wanted to start but just wasn't quite there. Tried turning the distributor both ways. One way it would sound a little more like starting, other way it would too after you got so far but it would also backfire like a gunshot.

So, any ideas what I did wrong? Really was wanting to use this tractor tomorrow. Thanks.

Wish the service and operators manuals would arrive.

Hey, the problem is probably much, much simpler than you may think and is probably a simple (a nicer word than dumb) mistake on your part. Fart around with it a little bit, you'd be amazed what you may find you did wrong, forgot to do, or misunderstood and installed something wrong where you thought it was right. I've done it all, with carburetor, distributor, valves, rocker arms, brakes, and steering system. It has been a fun ride, and it does give you a laugh when you discover you screwed something up. Now, don't misunderstand my response. I'm not making fun of you, I know how stressful it may be. I'm just saying that there's a good chance it's a simple fix. It is so difficult to try to brainstorm a solution when I can't be there to truly see the problem, but after changing points, plugs, condenser, cap, and rotor in my distributer, I can say that the usual reason for it not kicking off is simple human error. It was a simple fix and a silly mistake. I had the distributor rotated 180 degrees. And I have been laughing at myself ever since.

Maybe you're 1 crankshaft revolution off on timing, in other words when you think you are on TDC for #1 piston, maybe you're on the end of the exhaust stroke instead, just a thought

Roger, you are correct. switched my plug wires around and she fired right off. Moved wires back, pulled the distributor, rotated 180 degrees and she's right as rain. Spark advance even works now. Whoohoo!
