After is has sat for a week or so and I start the engine on gas, it smokes like it has diesel in it. After it clears out (with a lot of smoke) it runs good on gas. When I switch it to diesel, it runs great and I always let it run on gas before I shut it off. It there a way for the diesel to get into the cylinders while not running?

Had the same problem with an MD you have to make sure the linkages are adjusted right or you will get some diesel in there. On the left side of the motor where all the linkages come together make sure you have full motion.

Bill,

I bought a 450-D several years ago that smoked terrible and ran badly on gas startup What I did to cure it was to advance the distributor timing. It now starts fine on gas with almost no smoke and the RPMs are much higher. So something you can try. I always switch my 450-D and my MD to gas cycle for a few seconds before shutting off the ignition switch. But then I switch it back to diesel cycle.

Its pretty common owen, Like Bill said the gas induction system is not the best on these gas start diesels. They run very rich when first started. As they warm up on gas they clear up. You want to remember that the only throtle control while on the gas cycle you have is the choke. All three of mine start with a little smoke until they warm up. You notice that after you have gotten the tractor up to operating temp on diesel and shut it of and restart it on gas how nice it starts. Well when that head is hot the gas vaperizes a lot better.

Owen,
I know the manual says to switch back to gas before shutting it off, but I never do my 450 that way. I just shut off the throttle and let it die. Dad ran it that way for years on the farm.
I get "some" smoke when I start it, but I know that little carburator is not perfect and I figure it has to clean it's self out from running rich. If you have ever tied to find one of those you will understand why I do not fool with it.
There should not be much fuel to leak down when it is setting unless the injectors are really shot.
Are you sure you do not have bad valve guide seals and its oil that it burns when it starts causing the smoke? This would burn off pretty quick and run clean.
Just a thought,
Bill
