Farmall H ....strange noise

I've located the H that I drove as a kid, some 30 yrs. ago. It's really been neglected, but I hate to pass it up.The engine smokes some, but the troubling thing is the noise that seems to be coming from the center(clutch, pump)area. It sounds like a bearing thats shot, and the noise stops when the clutch is depressed slightly. When setting on the seat,it seems the noise is coming from directly under the seat, but when standing beside the tractor it almost sounds like the hydraulic pump is running.Tractor also growls pretty good when moving in reverse.Could this be a throwout bearing or does it sound much more serious? My better judgement tells me to pass it up,but my uncle owned this tractor over 35 years, and he taught me how to drive on it. Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Thanks to all who answered, you'll ge glad to know that I'll be bringing the old H home soon.I have a picture from 1965 with me setting in the seat, which would have made me 5 yrs. old.I used to sit on my uncles lap and he would give me rides in the lane.About the age of 10 he taught me to rake hay with this H.He died in 1988 and a neighbor ended up getting the H.I kept an eye on it ever since, and asked him more than once to let me know if he ever wanted to sell it. I guess I was fortunate that it never went far away, made it real easy to keep my eye on it. I'll take my time and work on it when time and money allow. Thanks again....I guess I really am lucky to now own the first tractor that I ever rode on.

Ol Roy,
Glad to hear you came to you senses. You can find another H, but not the "one" anywhere else. I recently bought both of my dads 300's from the guy that bought our farm in 1989 from dad. I learned to drive on one of them, it was my dads first tractor. He sold them to the man when he bought the farm and they didnt make the sale with all the green stuff. That made them easy to track in the last several years. The guy didnt farm and only used them to bushhog and grad the driveway, I was lucky as they have only been run about 50 hours apiece in the last 15 years, shed kept and still not faded. I paid 4000 for both tractors and seven pieces of fast hitch equipment and two hay trailers, cant complain. Take the H home and fix it as you can, you will not regret it, because it is the "ONE"

I bought the first tractor I drive from my Uncle several years ago... it'd been neglected since the middle 1970's. You can not believe how good it felt to get it running again, it sure brought back some very good memories of being a kid!!

BUY IT! As someone else has said, "There is only one that you learned on". As far as the noise goes, I read somewhere that, "If it casts a shadow, it can be restored!" Besides it's only money, even the pigs won't eat it! Good luck, but as I said in the beginning, "BUY IT.

Don't pass it up. You can take your time and fix it as time/funds permit. I own the C I learned to drive on sitting on my dads lap over 30 years ago. When dad passed on I was initially going to sell it. It had not been ran in 2-3 years and I decided it would be best to get it running before selling. When it roared to life and I sat there listening to it purr there was no way it was going. It runs well now, but still looks bad. I cleaned out a place inside, out of the weather for it and use it occasionally. I am waiting to get more time to paint and fix some weak areas. It will remain a working tractor. I enjoy driving it too much to let it sit and look pretty. Even if I don't get it all painted and shiny it is still a fun tractor to have around.

Does it make the noise when sitting idle with the clutch down? If it only makes the noise when you are moving, it may be the input shaft going into the transmission. I don't know abou the H's but the M's like to wear the bearings out and take out the first two gears on the input shaft. I have never fixed one myself, but my dad has and he says it aint to tough. Then again he used to be a mechanic. If it was me and you wanted to keep it as original as possible, fix the noise rather than chnaging out massive parts of the tractor. I hope you have fun with it.

Ol' Roy,

There is only ONE tractor that you drove 30 years ago. Don't let it go to anyone else, no matter what the problem may be.

I've got an H now, but it's not the SAME H that was in the family and that I learned how to drive about 50 years ago. Close, but close is not a bulls' eye.

The noise is probably a throw out bearing or a belly pump -- either one cheaply fixed compared to the cost of the ONE thing; the same tractor you drove so many years ago. That's the key, it's the same machine.

...this from a guy who has an H - but not the same H that he learned to drive oh so many years ago. Get it! Whatever the cost. And if anybody has a '47 H from RR2 Brownsburg, Indiana -- I wanna talk to you, even if it's in pieces and hardly recognizable as an H. It's that ONE H.

I think you get my drift, Ol'Roy, there is no substitute.

The belly pump can be easily & quickly disconnected to eliminate the pump as a source of noise.

Just remove the 2 capscrews that secure the dust cover in back of the pump, remove the 2 large cotterkeys, slide the ring collars inward on the connector shaft & slide the shaft out.
That's it!
PS: don't drop any parts and put them back when finished testing.

H Farmall is a very simple tractor, if it is anything in the clutch area, or in the hydralic pump area it can isolated very easily. Since the tractor has sentimental value and meaning to you, I wouldn't pass on it. Feel free to email me any questions that you have. I own a 1948 H that was a graduation present from my folks, and a 1951 M that was my grandfathers, so I know where you are coming from.

I wouldnt pass it up. I would love to find the old tractors I learned on.
I cant help you with whats wrong, but it dont sound good.
Even if the tranny is going. There are plenty of old H's around that have good back ends but are stuck. Or maybe some one parted one out and still has the rear end.
If it was any old H I would pass. But how often do you get to get the one you learned on?
Try not to pay much for it. If you get it. Did you tell him why you were looking at it?
Hope not. Price goes up if they think you have sentimental value on it. I would tell him you have one with a bad motor and a good rear end maybe you can make one out of two. Offer him $200
Just my thoughts on it.

Hey Kelly,
Any luck on that one you are looking for up by Bemidji. Just got home today from duck hunting up there. Had my eye out for it but didn't see it.
