Hey Guys:

I'm thinking of building a 1466 pulling tractor. I'm wanting to know the weight, engine size, and reliability of these tractors. What are the pro's and con's of these hoss's? How much power can I make out of one? What type of fuel system and turbo do they have from the factory? Are there many performance parts/mods for this series tractors? I'd probably want to lighten it up some; what all can I do to lighten it up and can I install a tricycle front end?

Thanks a million!

John

They came with a 436 cu. in. engine. It has a Model 100 fuel pump with 10 mm plungers. It just depends on how much money you want to spend. They came from the factory with 145-150 hp. You can crank them up to 250+ hp just by tweeking on the fuel pump. You can bore them out to 550+ cu. in. depending on the pistons, sleeves, connecting rods, and crankshaft you use. With the Model 100 pump you can put in 11, 13, or 15 mm plungers along with bigger fuel lines. Or for lots of dollars you can put a P-pump on it. There are bigger turbos you can put on it for more $$$. You can lose a lot of weight by replacing the radiator housing with a fiber glass one. When you start getting into the "anything" goes category you can remove the hydraulics and the TA. You can put a narrow front end on it which would save you more weight. About the lightest that you will be able to get to is 9500 lbs. A stock 1466 runs a little over 11,000 lbs. There's an 856 and a 966 in northwest Iowa that are probably putting out 1,000+ hp. It doesn't take them long to get to the far end of the track in 4th high and running about 5,000 rpm's. It just depends on how much money you want to spend and how serious you are.

Guys:

Can you find a 1466 that came from the factory WITHOUT a T.A. I'm wanting to turn the tractor up pretty decent and am worried about the strength of it, I'd just rather use straight gears. BTW, how many gears is this tractor? Is it a 4 speed with high and low like the 856's?

Thanks,

John

yes many 1466 tractors form the southern states came from the factory without ta. or you can stright shaft a tractro that has ta. if you are going to go to super or pro stock they have a tolaly different gear set . you wont be using the factory gear's. what type of pulling are you going to be doing? hot farm, super farm, pro stock or super stock?. and yes the 1466 is like the 856 you are talking about 4 gears with high and low. how much hp are you thinking of?

I'm wanting to pull in farm stock, hot farm/open. The first time I pull I'd like to be at 200 or greater. I will see how i do, If I need more smoke, I'll start getting fuel and turbo work done. I don't know if a TA will live up to that power well or not, pulling and slamming them back may harm them. How cheap can you find a decent running 1466 for? Any more info appreciated.

John
