Had the local mechanic order a thermostat for my Super M. What he gave me is a 195 degree one, is that right?

Installed it and the tractor promptly boiled over within 10 minutes. It has since been removed.

The parts CD calls for the thermostat to be 165-190 degrees. I assume that means it starts to open at 165 and is fully open at 190. I think thermostats are usually called by the temp they start to open. Thus a 195 degree stat is too much for the Super M. IH part number is 33814 DB

I've run a 180 deg t'stat in my Super M for several years - it works fine. I find it runs better with a 180 t'stat than with it does with a 160 - especially under light load in cool, damp weather.

Probably got you one for a kerosese M. They will run 10-20 deg hotter than a gas T'stat. i'd be looking for one around 180.

Put it with the bronze button thing down (towards the motor). After removing I tested it and it did open at 195. Just thought that was a bit high for a tractor.

Just setting here tyren to think what goes up and what goes down today i am brain dead and it has been a couple years since i put one in but the first one i did put in backwards and felt like a idiot. I can't remember just what the correct temp should be but i am thinking either 160 or 180.

I think either 160 or 165 was the OEM rating. They ran those gas Farmalls pretty cool.

I think you are right; it takes a lot to get those older Farmalls even a little bit warm.
