I just aquired a 560 Diesel. When I got it there was some water on top of the pistons causing it to make one revelution and stop. We got it home and pulled the injectors out and spun it over, put the injectors back in and cranked it. We are getting some white smoke that we thought we may be getting water from somewhere. I drained the fuel tank and changed the fuel filters and that didn't seem to help much. The smoke will clear up after a minute or so at low to medium idle but smokes like a late freight at high idle. any ideas? thanks in advance.

Ok, after further review, When I said high idle I meant full throttle. The smoke is white. If it were a head gasket and that was water burning in the exhaust and there were no other leaks on the tractor this should show up in the water level in the radiator shouldn't it? I appreciate all the input and look forward to more.

High idle is full throttel and if it is white smoke that could mean low compression or not burning of all fuel . with out being there it is hard to make a good diagnosis of the problem . The old indirect injection engines would rattel and throw white smoke till they warmed up and if one or more of the glow plugs were not working well or not at all or if a precombustion chamber was cracked or a injector was not breaking the way it should , there are a lot of things that come into play . If you are worried about water leaking into the cyl. you could pull the glow pulgs or the injectors and pressure up the radiator to around 17 to20 lbs and let it set and see if the pressure drops and then crank the engine over and see which hole the water come out of.

What color is the smoke at high idle white or black ?? if black i would fist check the air cleaner if it is clean or sorta clean then i would be looken at the fuel pump for over fuelen or weak injectors, broken or cracked pre combustion chambers or last but not least head gskt or head or cracked sleeve and block.

They will crack they head if they have gotten hot. It is either a head gasket or a cracked head. There is a place in IOWA that welds heads & Blocks very well but it is expensive. Try a head gasket and if that don't work, you can try using stop leak but it sounds like you got more leakage than stop leak would handle.

if you had water in the cylinders, chances are if it is not rian water, you have a blown head gasket....they are bad for blowing head gaskets

Ours did that for ten years on cold Kansas mornings (or any time of the day in the winter). I figured they are all that way. Never seemed to have any problems. Just don't start it in your machine shed. ;)
