I had my 400 out raking hay today. I noticed a growling type sound. Not a grinding sound or any thing like that.
It seems to be coming from the area where the TA lives. The sound is only when moving with gears ingaged. Not there when moving and clutch disingaged. ( clutch pushed in)
I know the TA is weak on the low side. It works fine until you get any load on it. Then it just slips.
Les see... The growling gets loader when you increase the load. Like going up a slight incline.
Could this be related to the TA or maybe a bearing in there or some thing.
Any Ideas? I know I will be spliting her for a TA over haul. Just only want to do that once.

Might be old gas. I remember in the 60's one of the gas companies advertised that their gas would "put a Tiger in your tank". Maybe he is growling.
Sorry, sounded funny here.

How much "growling" is normal? When I run my 400 and it is in neutral it is pretty quiet. But, when I push in the clutch I hear a slight growling sound. Not loud but I just figured as large as all of those parts are, and as close to them as I am sitting, that to be able to hear the throw-out bearing was just normal. Again, I can only hear that it is engaged.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question but I sure am looking forward to reading the replies that you get. My 400 TA makes no noise but it isn't working and I am interested to find out what I need to do to fix it. Good post Kelly C.

Bob

Or maybe the sound could be described as a slight thumping type sound.

Kelly, our 400 makes the same noise..... ..But it only does it on a load when it is pushed down hill..... ...I haven't figured it out yet. My brother and buddy told me they were hearing it right after we bought it. I didn't hear it until this spring when I was pulling 4-14's with it. It only did it twice but it still bothers me. Will be reading you posts with interest!!!!! Got your site updated yet?
