I have a 5488 mechanical front tractor and the front end will not pull anymore. The front drive shaft still turns and there is no grinding sounds. I'm thinking the front end clutch is bad. Anybody run into this problem? I talked to a guy who said He worked at Case IH for awhile and he told me that you had to split the tractor to change the front end clutch. That doesn't make since to me because the drive shaft still turns to the front end. Does anybody know if the Front end clutch is before or after the front drive line? And do you have to split the tractor to change it?

Thanks,
Dan

I have a 5088 fwa, it stopped pulling and it turned out to be the driveline coupler was stripped. IH mechanic said it was meant to strip when overloaded (like a shear bolt). Hard to see unless you unhook the front drive and check, but well worth it compared to the cost of splitting the tractor.

I pulled the front driveline off and you nailed it right on the head. On the front of the drive shaft is a splined flange with four bolts that connect the drive shaft to the front differential. The splines were stripped on the flange and the splines on the shaft were pretty worn. There was a splined coupler on the back side of the drive shaft but all the spline were good there. It cost me 30 minutes to take apart, $236.00 for the flange, $270.00 for new drive line, & probably 30 minutes to put back together. The parts will be in Tuesday. I felt this was pretty cheap considering the alternative (splitting the tractor).

Thanks for the help,
Dan

Does the drive line coupler attach to a shaft and does the shaft have splines? Is the coupler on the front side or back side of the front drive line? I'm assuming if the coupler is stripped you replace the whole coupler. Is that right? If I remove the plastic guard off the drive line is it self explainatory how to get the coupler off? I'll have to take a look at it tomorrow. I hope you are right.

Thanks,
Dan

The mechanic I talked to that doesn't work at Case IH anymore asked me if the drive line still was turning or not. When I told him yes he said it was most likely the clutch pack. What your saying about the front diff. turning the shaft makes since. Thats probably what this mechanic was gettig at; because if something was broke in the front diff. the shaft would proubably not turn when disengaged. He said that he couldn't remember if it was spring engaged and Hyd. disengaged or visa versa but he said he knew it was opposite of the Magnums. Sounds like I'm going to have a 2WD tractor for awhile.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan I've never had anything to do with a 5000 series tractor but, if the front shaft is still turning it would be because it is still connected to, and being turned by the front diff. I suspect it would need splitting to work on the MFD clutch but, I would be checking hydraulic pressures first because some of these tractors were engaged hydraulically and some were engaged with spring pressure. Check your local Inter. man. Regards, Redfan.

The front driveshaft turning tells you nothing about the problem. It turns whether the clutch is engaged or disengaged because it is directly connected to the front diff pinion shaft. When MFD is turned off, the front wheels drive the shaft. The MFD clutch on every tractor I know of is between the rear of the front driveshaft and the rear axle pinion shaft; a split is likely to service it. Most of these clutches are hydraulic pressure off and spring pressure on. That is why they default to engaged when the tractor is shut off.
