Hi Guys,

I've located and am in the process of buying an old M or H (haven't made up my mind yet).

Anyway, neither one has a wide front end, which I need. All the salvage yards are asking $800 and up for old junkers.

There used to be a company called "Swartz" which made an aftermarket front end, but I'm wondering if they are now out of business, as I can't seem to locate them.

Were these bad front ends? Are there any other alternatives? Am I at the mercy of the salvage yards with their "buyer beware" attitudes?

Thanks for your help,

Allan

I bought a NOS swartz wide minus hubs for $730. Needed it for my pull type combine and raking hay. I have narrow also but can't see driving over everything. When you're moving it turns pretty easy but stop and turn is a pain. I think it has a good turning radius. Very Very nice well built widefront!

Contact me by email.
I just removed a wide front from my fathers SMTA and replaced with a single front wheel. He wants to sell the Schwartz wide front.

steel wheel ranch lists new schwartz front axles and parts for them, www.steelwheelranch.com I understand the delema, I have wanted a wide front for my SMTA for some time. The narrow front is great for some types of farming and can't argue with the last post here. Think it just depends upon what type work you do with it. If you get a wide front the next thing you will need is power steering. I have seen some adds for wide fronts in the photo adds and classifieds here, some went much cheaper but unless you live close to the seller freight would kill ya.

I have a 560 with a swartz front end on it. Its a very good axel. they do make 2 versions of it, one is a heavy duty one. the one I have I believe to be the HD one. I dropped the front wheel in a hole and broke an axel a few years back. I was able to get a new one from my IH dealer. I don't know if they are still in bussiness or not. maybe someone else knows the answer to that.

This is a debatable subject everyone is entitled to what they want but why do you want a wide front end so bad? Please don't take me wrong I farm with "C's", "H's" and "M's" two of the M's I changed over to narrow front end and one still remains wide. If you are actually going to use the tractor a wide front is a pain, it takes a mile to turn around on headlands and it just always seems cumbersome. Also in the winter I can "stack" alot more tractors in my barn with narrow fronts. I am well aware of what most consider the down side of narrow fronts and that would be turning the tractor over. As we grew up we all can tell a story about knowledge of tractor rollovers. I know of 2, one resulted in death the other an injury. However, after investigation most agreed that the accidents were caused by operator error and aggresive driveing more then a dangerous tractor. My main point is don't turn down a great deal because its a narrow front end like I have seen some people do in the past. Just my 2-cents

It is indeed debatable. Everyone has his/her preferences, and there are times when a wide front end wouldn't do a good job very well. I love to see these narrow front tractors work. But here in my area, it is a rarity to see one. But I am one of those that would turn a good deal down, because if if you told me you would give me a tractor with a narrow front end only if I would use it, I would still have to turn it down. There are farmers that feel the same way about wide fronts also. I've seen two fatal accidents with turnovers and they were both wide fronts. One was a Super A and the other Ford. I think narrow fronts are safe, just not feasible in certain situations.
