So far: Friends tractor needs it for harvest season
300 gas row crop
engine starts out cold
shut off when warmed up....no restart
Had IH guy put on new coil
said the coil had built in resistor and didn't need the two wires going to starter solonoid.
????? ????? ???
Engine started this morning with no choke @ 30 degreesF
Ran unit on grain auger for 30 minutes, Wouldn't restart for next load.
Got started by pulling with 4wd. Decided to let idle between loads. Engine started to run rough when ideling and helper decided to open throttle. Engine died and wouldn't restart. Pulled with 4wd turning about 1500 rpm finally started after about a 300 ft pull. After running Put tractor in gear when governor called for more fuel it stalled and wouldn't restart. Checked voltage at starter and coil when cranking 11.8 volts but still didn't seem to get spark ( did not test with wet fingers)
If engine starts after sitting for days with no choke on a cold morning seems to me that it is getting excess fuel????? ????? ??
2nd wire is disconnected from starter solonoid. ????? ? Where is the resistor????? Inside the coil????? ?????
Choke seems to be frozen..... can't pull choke.
Is carb rebuild in order? PS: Tractor looks like it just came out of showroom.

Sounds to me as though it probably needs a tune-up. Have you checked the plugs' condition and the gaps on them and the points? How about the timing, both at very low idle and fast idle - is the advance working per specs.? You've probably got something wrong in one or more of these areas based upon what you're describing.

Apparently the tractor was converted over to 12V at some point, and it sounds as though a 12V coil was installed, so that should be OK. Since it starts at all, the coil wiring is probably OK. I'd be looking elsewhere for your problem.

Since you are having problems restarting, you're probably flooding, and aren't getting the plugs dried out until it sits for a while. If the throttle linkage is working properly, pushing the throttle to its minimum setting and cranking a few revolutions should be all that's needed to dry the plugs. If not, you could either fix the throttle, or shut off the gas at the tank and crank a bit to dry the plugs out. You may get a pop when they get dry enough to fire, followed by the engine dying immediately because there's not enough fuel flow - turn the gas back on and you should be good to go. From the sounds of things you absolutely shouldn't be using the choke - might be a good idea to check it and make sure the choke plate is all the way open.

Good luck - please repost what you find and if you want more input.

Tractor Vet and Dick,
It's running!!!!! Found out tractor had been taken to a pro(??) to tune up. They Rebuilt carb and forgot to tighten a few things. Put on wrong coil.
Replaced coil with proper coil and RESISTOR and rewired coil to starter, timed, changed sp plg wires. Dist hadn't been greased since last paint job. STARTS and runs great. Thanks for the help.

If the tractor has been switched from the 6 volt to twelve volt then use the 6 volt coil with a resistor also check the points and cond. . Sounds like he put a new 6 volt coil on and never gave it a second thought about it being switched to twelve . That new coil is TOASTE.
