My I-544 has not run since last fall. I finially admitted I could not fix it and after 10 minuits my mechanic told me it was a bad coil. Ten dollors later, it started right up (plus the cost of the mechanic).

What is the proper way to test for a bad coil for future diagonis?

A quick and dirty way to test a coil is to ground the terminal that goes to the points - after removing the ignition wire from the other terminal. Pull the high voltage wire at the distributor cap end. Position the tip of the high voltage wire about a quarter inch from any engine frame/block component. Now touch any hot wire from the battery to the ignition terminal side of the coil. The high voltage wire should produce a spark every time you remove this ignition wire from the coil. Look for a nice brisk blue spark. Beware of a lame orange spark.

One thing to note: Many coils only fail when they are hot. If the above test works on a cold coil, you may still have a coil problem. This is usually indicated by having the engine run fine when things are cold, but having problems with missing or cutting out as things warm up.

YOu know, with the old coil it would run better cold then when warm. I would have never thought a coil could do that. Thanks.
