I have been reading alot of your posts on here, you all seem to be very knowledgable. I have been wanting to start collecting IH tractors for quite a while now, but with 3 kids it doesn't come easy these days. I did manage to buy a Farmal H a while back and I have a question for you all. The serial Number is 13779, according to this site it is a 1940. It has live hydraulics, was this available then or is it a switcheroo?

Thanks

I think "switcheroo" is too strong a term. It is not original, live hydraulics were added to many of these tractors. I consider it an improvement that should add value. The purists can always put them back like they were.

The live hydraulics may not be a good thing unless the heavier cam gears were installed with the pump. As I understand it, many of them were not.

You are correct-- I have an M with a live pump that has never given any trouble. My guess would be that if a person wanted a live pump, that the hydraulics were being used a lot. If better gears weren't installed originally, they probably broke and were replaced. Sort of like the 460/560, not many around that weren't fixed. Buyer beware, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy an H with live hyd.
