I just got my first tractor. It's a 1945 FARMALL (H). It's not getting fire. The people that I bought it from had it for 2 years, they changed it from the factory coil to an external 6 volt coil.(They rigged it.) There is fire on the pos. side of the coil and power on the neg. side also, but no power to the coil wire. Here is how they had it wired. A wire goes from the key switch to the pos. side of the coil. A wire goes from the neg. side of the coil to the condenser and points there is power to all of this but no power to the coil wire. Is this 6 volt system wired wrong or what? If it is, could someone please e-mail me and tell me the proper way to do this. I have had this tractor for about 2 weeks. I just want to hear it run and I am tired of my wife laughing at me lol. Thanks & all info is appreciated.

Had the same problem with mine. Check the screw comming out of the distributor where the wire form the coil connects. If it grounds against the distributor cap it will produce the symptoms you discribe. I fixed mine with a 1/8" piece tubing that just fit around the screw. Hope this helps.

Is your H still positive ground? if it is the positive side of the coil should go to the distributor. However you should still have spark apparently the points are not working right they may be not grounding or misadjusted or badly burnt. what I usually do is hold your coil wire close to a ground and work your points with a screwdiver just to see if you are getting spark there ok.sometimes there may be just a little dirt between them Good Luck. Let me know what you find. Ken

The points look great. I think it's wired backwards from what you are telling me. I'll try it in the morning and let you know. Thank you

Ken, If your battery is wired positive ground than the wire from the distributer should be wired to the positive side of the coil,if it is wired negative ground the wire from the distributer should be wired to the negative side of the coil

It's pos. ground, but should there be a 3rd wire for a ground?
