Rust-Oleum revisited....

hi all,
I've already dug through old forum postings and found some discussion on the rust-oleum IHC red "rattle can"... but opinions seem divided.

What I'm wondering is, is the "new" rust-oleum rattle can stuff any good? I just picked up 2 cans of rust-oleum implement paint at the farm store and figured I could at least use it to paint the smaller parts of the tractor. The cans say "IHC Red" right on them.

Does this newer stuff fade? I mean, do you think rust-oleum has improved their stuff? Does it need primer? I was going to do my '49 Cub grill- I blasted it down to bare metal with a grit blaster.

I can share with you my own experience with rattle can paint. I bought one can of 2150 in a spray can. It would rattle the minute you picked it up, the paint didn't cover and it was very thin. I realize that this was only one can that I am basing my opinion on.

I used the rust-o-leum that you are talking about and had good luck, would use it again. I have painted small parts on my tractor and couldn't tell the difference against the 2150 IH red from the gallon can.

Just remember one thing about this forum, opinions are like rectums, everyone has one.

If you want to use spray cans, get it in IH 2150 from your Case/IH dealer. This is superior rattle can paint. Notation of color on other brands is meaningless (i.e. wrong). But, it will not match the remaining paint on your tractor, which was originally IH 50 (brighter red). Definitely use Case-IH primer. An epoxy primer is preferred, but it does not come in spray cans. It will fade, eventually. You will have better luck with adhesion if you etch the surface with some sort of rust inhibitor/preventative before priming. I don't care for rattle can paint, except for out of the way places, but some people paint whole tractors with it.

I just wanted to confirm what CNKS said. Don't ruin an otherwise successful paint job by using Rust-Oleum spray cans. Stick with the IH 2150. It simply isn't that expensive. It is consisently uniform and matches perfectly anything that you will spray out of a regular paint gun should you mix any of that as well.

be careful there some paint is decieving don't go by just the picture on the can paint something else first to make sure it is the color you want some is just a little bit different but noticable. careful with the primer it also may alter the color. just to be safe i only use international paint but you can experiment.
