My C Farmall redently had the 6V generator rebuilt and a new voltage regulator installed. The battery charges while the tractor is running, but discharges when I turn it off. What could be the problem?

What Gary said is true, it happened to me as well and I replaced the voltage regulator and no more battery drian when not running. Now if I can only get the amp gauge to work properly.
Oh and by the way it is said if one unhooks the battery for some reason there is a good chance that you will have to "polarize" the generator to get it to charge once you reinstall the battery.

Dan,when you change from GEN to ALT you must reverse wires on the amp meter

James, I have reinstalled the 6volt Generator. When I purchased the tractor it had an alternator on it. If the person that changed the Gen to an alt switched the wires then I may have to switch them back. I will check and thanks for the tip.

Dan,I didnt know what your problem was ,I was just guessing,But if your gauge is reading backwards thats all it could be.A amp gauge only reads which way current is flowing. If you need help give me a personal email,I will send you a simple electrial drawing.

Assuming everything is wired right, it sounds like the "cut-out" relay is stuck closed in the voltage regulator.
Your regulator has a set of points that close when the generator output reaches an established point to begin charging the battery. When the output drops to a certain point,(when you shut your engine off) the "cutout" relay is suppose to "open" the circuit to prevent discharging your battery.
