I have a Super A with engine serial no. 272992. Some previous owner removed the seat brackets so the serial no. plate for the tractor is gone. Wonder if the engine serial no. and tractor serial no. are the same or cross referenced.

Thanks a heap for all the responses. I looked at the casting date codes again. The date codes are all 'S'that I can locate on major castings. The Super A must be a 1949 but what the serial number for the tractor is just somewhere in the range of '49 serial numbers. I wanted to put a serial number tag on the rh seat bracket but am reluctant to stamp a number that may belong to another Super A owner. Thanks again.

I can add a bit of input here; my Super A serial number is 336977 and the engine serial number is 338597. I also know this is the original engine.

Your Super A will have the older type block so serial number 272992 could be exactly same or very close. That would make your tractor a 1949. What do the casting codes on engine block, torque tube, transmission case, etc tell you. Casting codes are those numbers that give day and month by number and year by letter, and it looks like it has the head of a screw cast in between each set of digets. What type of tyrods and control arms does your tractor have? automotive or older type with the S shaped control arm with ball on end.

I think you are safe to call it a 1949, particularly if there are some S (1949) casting codes on it. It is unlikely that the engine serial exactly matches the chassis serial, as Guy Fay usually says if they match. The A and B chassis and engine serials matched thru 201000, the chassis serial then went to 220829. There was a 1703 chassis number skip between the Chicago and Louisville production in 1947. The last 20000+ A's and B's were built in Louisville. Guy does not say that the Super A's matched. His number is probably off about the same as yours is. I'll try to remember to check the engine serial on my Super A.

I probably have no business responding to this post but here goes anyway. I know nothing about Farmall A's and /or super A's. BUT, on my H the serial number on the engine block is the same as the number stamped on the ID plate. HTH, Mike

No they wouldn't be the same on a Super A. I'm not aware of any cross reference either.
