TA - High or Low - In or Out?

I have a '62 560G, and typically operate on the "low" side of the TA, only throwing the lever forward when I need additional speed (like upshifting a powershift). It seems from reading other posts I am using it backwords, do other people operate in the high side most of the time, and pull back the lever for more power like when the tractor lugs down in the field. Is the "low" side (lever back) considered as having the TA engaged or disengaged?

Am I causing damage by running on the low side continually?

The Operators Manuals say to run the T/A ahead (high side) and "Torque It" (pull lever back) to reduce speed and increase pulling power. Not until the 706/806 and later large frame tractors when the design was totally changed was the T/A really designed for constant usage on the low side.

Only other concern is that on low side you don't have compression for down hill. I run mine on high side most of the time and only shift to low when it gets tough or I need to slow down with baler.

Good point. Many of the TA failures are a result of going downhill in low range. Its quite OK to go uphill in low range, but not downhill. The torque should be from the engine to the TA and not from the rear to the TA in low range.

If everything is adjusted right, you are not hurting the TA, but the high side is straight through and not really cuasing any wear n the planetaries, as is happening on the low side. We used to run our 350 on low side quite a bit of the time, plowing and discing, and never had any trouble with it. Just rmeember to keep it adjusted right, and don't eas the lever in or out. Squeeze the handle and let it go. Also, change the hy-tran in the transmission regularly to extend the life of the TA.
