I recently purchased a 560 Diesel and the voltage meter was damaged. I replaced it and also had the generator gone through. I hooked it all back up and the meter just goes wild. Jumping from charge to disgharge. the generator is good . Could it be the regulator?

Bryan - I agree with Big Jim - it's probably a bad regulator. However a loose generator drive belt can cause wild ammeter fluctuations too.

I also agree that if yours is a working tractor, swapping the generator for a Delco 10SI alternator will be cheaper over the long run (and more reliable) than replacing the voltage regulator.

Bryan, I think you are correct. I had the same thing happen to me several years ago with my 560 diesel. I priced a new voltage regulator and it was very close to the price of a new alternator(with a built in regulator). I decided to toss the generator and rewire it to fit an alternator. I believe the alternator used was a Delco-Remy 10SI. You can get this alternator at just about any auto parts store for cheap. It can be hooked up either standard 3 wire setup, or you can get it converted to a "self exiting" style with a one wire setup. You would need to fabricate a different mounting bracket. I found this to be a better setup in the longrun (unless you are concerned about original restoration).
