I have just have the valves ground on my Farmall A and I am ready to put things back together. When I install the head gasket do I use any gasket material that comes in a tube or do I just place the gasket on dry and torque down the head? If I do need to use the stuff in the tube, what should I use? Thanks.....Gerald

I had trouble getting mine to seal dry ? And had to remove it again due to water in the oil. I learned the hard way, The solution for me was to use some brake cleaner on the head and block surfaces, This takes off any grease or oil and also evaporates quickly. Then use the permatex cooper gasket sealer that is in the aerosol can and give both sides of the headgasket a good coat or two. Yours may seal ok dry, but in my opinion its best to use the sealer, its kind of like insurance.
good luck ,

Gerald, acording to my old IH service manual you should aply a light coat of grease to the head and block. I put 'em on dry.

I use a couple of light coat of Permatex Copper spray a gasket on a new head gasket. Make sure the head and block are clean and free of any contamination.
