Yesterday I was cutting grass with red cub tractor and it just shut down for no apparent reason. It will turn over but just won't start. Two months ago I changed out the starter pull switch, because of same problem. It had gone bad after 46 years of service. Checked out switch, it seems to be ok. I checked points and coil they are ok. Please help if possible.

My 51 cub experiences this same problem regularly. My tank has some rust and it is just as if I had shut it down, I pull the cap off the tank and the fuel line off the carb, then wrap a shop towel around the tank filler and give a big puff until fuel flows. Put the line back on and she fires right off. I am looking into having my tank lined to eliminate this problem. Good luck. Jay

I have experienced that problem twice: 1. when debris in the fuel line got on my needle valve (the cub would die, then would start in a few minutes when the particle floated back up the line, then would die as soon as the particle was pulled down to the needle valve) 2. most recently, I burnt out my coil and my condenser when I ran the cub on a 12V battery for a few minutes--my 6v was dead and I wanted to impress a friend on how well my cub ran. I checked every plug, every wire, coil wire, took carb apart to check needle valve, changed condenser and coil and bingo--it finally ran like a top.

Have you tested for actual spark at the plug ?

if points and wires and plugs are ok then it has to be a fuel starvation problem.
