I purchased A super M in the Spring but never really had time to use it much until today. Heres the problem, I was pulling a disc (10') for awhile and the manifold seemed to get much hotter then I would expect, it discolored the decal above it on the outside sheet metal. The tractor does not run bad. When I first started with the disc I pulled it for a short time in 4th gear just to see the power of the tractor I want to pull it some day and it really did not have the power I expected. I have other M's and I can pull my disc in 4th gear with them, I only do it for a short distance just to push the tractor not trying to abuse it I have know dyno or anything to put the tractor to the test. Is this a timing problem or does anyone have an idea what could cause this? The temp gauge was on "run" not hot.

Look on it for casting numbers and then post some of those Most will end with a letter and that letter in turn tells the year that part was made and from there you can get a pretty good idea of the year the tractor was

Check to see if the heat shield is still in place on the inside of the hood, on the manifold side. I have never seen an M get so hot that it would burn the decal.

Ted i would check the timing.I had the trouble
of overheating on my M Farmall. It was advanced so far that it wanted to get real hot, without a load on the engine. Adjusted it within proper spec and now it seems to be fine.

Don't know what others will tell you, but IMO that is normal! Our M-TA used to be our one and only tractor when we first started out..... ...Pulled 3-14's and disk in the spring, raked and baled hay in the summer, and was on a mtd. picker in the fall..... ...It shared the work with the landlords JD B and 620(Didn't use the 620 much)..... .....It got so hot it cooked the Farmall decal right off the hood! If you were pulling a disc in 4th gear I am sure it(manifold) was getting warm..... ..... This is normal..... ..I don't know what you could do to stop it..... .If you want to keep it nice, don't use it hard, but if you are going to use it(Like we do) they don't stay "Showroom" new for too long..... ..Scatches and burnt decals come with the territory!!!
