I recently came across one of these tractors and wondered what is the difference between this and a regular 300? This one goes forward. Wasn't it supposed to go "backwards"? How hard is it to add a PTO and WFE to it? Is it worth the effort?

To change direction of travel on low drum you removed ring gear and switched it to opposite side of pinion. This required gear shift to moved to side away from pinion shifting forks were not reversable and different set was required for each side(at least on H and M not sure on 300). This is true for low drum picker only on high drum direction was changed in special drop axles remove drop axles and mount wheels in normal way and tractor would travel forward. Most high drums were mounted on M or larger tractor 300 most likely was low drum. To chande high drum to forward travel high clearance you left drop axles in place and used reversing kit from low drum to get forward travel the tracor wae essentially reversed twice.

Ready for the million dollar answer? When nothing seems to actually be wrong, pull the valve again. I popped it out, measured it, found nothing wrong, and put it back in. AND IT WORKED. 0psi when off and 225 when on. The funny part is that I could have probably done that before doing the pto clutch job, but oh well. New clutches never hurt anyone. So that won't need to be done again for 30+ years. Anyway, I'm thankful for your help. Everyone I have been talking to has been telling me to check things I've been checking. I'm glad I went for another look at the valve.

I'm going to look at it this way: If I didn't change the fluid and clean things out, I probably would have had the same issue spring up again shortly. Again, thanks for the help.

The low drum pickers used stanard rear axles and tricle front end (often single front wheel) and wre not high clearance.

The cotton tractors are fairly rare. Yes, a wide front end could be added when in the low configuration. Basically, the tractors were set to operate in two conditions- high backwards (when the picker was on) and low forwards (the rest of the year). Some folks used them in high forwards for use with sprayers.

You have the confused, that is a Mag (in the picture)the wire you see is a kill switch, and a coil on a distributor is externally mounted. The coil on the mag is looked internally.

Re: Rear wheel adjust on a B in reply to Hugh MacKay, 03-08-2009 01:48:56
Slappy,

You adjust the wheel width on a B by bolting the wheel disk and rim together in various combinations. Both wheel disk and rim can be flipped, and the rim can be mounted on the inside or outside of the wheel disk to get various widths.

For the narrowest settings, the wheel disk should be mounted "dished in." You'll see what I mean when you get there.

It's likely that the B you're buying is narrow enough to go on the trailer without modification, but you should bring a friend, a heavy floor jack, wrenches, and some PB Blaster with you just in case.

Causes of premature point burn up may be:

1) Excess current cuz the ballast is undersized in cases with a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt tractor

2) Undersized or not connected or bad condensor

3) Condensor isnt well grounded

4) Points incorrectly gapped

NOTE you mentioned a resistor ..... .Normally a 6 volt tractor with a 6 volt coil WOULDNT HAVE ANY EXTERNAL BALALST RESISTOR

An 8 volt battery on a 6 volt system and 6 volt unballasted coil will cause minor premature points burn up cuz the points are switching a lil more current buttttt ttttt If its a 6 volt coil and the condensor is good and wired in I wouldnt expect them to burn up all that much sooner. To be exact a smaller sized ballast would be used when running an 8 volt battery and a 6 volt coil...

Id check the condensor and its wiring n connection n ground,,,,, ,,look into that resistor situation as if its a 6 volt coil you dont need a regular sized ballast but a smaller ohms unit..... .
