I removed the water pump from my father-in-laws tractor because he said he heard a noise from it. After I got the pump off I can find nothing wrong with it other then grease coming from the shaft towards the fan blades. This thing looks like a nightmare to work on; can anyone tell me if there is a seal that needs to be replaced and how hard it is to do? I don't own the tractor so I really don't want to spend $40.00 on a manual that I'll only use one time. Thanks for your help.

Russ: Most of those IH water pumps, when they get noisy aren't far from leaking or a rebuild. CaseIH do stock rebuilt trade in pumps for some of these. The stocking is just luck of the draw. I had my 140 pump rebuilt, just a smaller version of yours. The cost was under $75. (Can) Bearing and seal on fan shaft is what usually goes. I just took my pump to local auto parts store and they sent it off to rebuilder, 24 hours it was back.

They get progressively more noisy and then without warning you get a shower of coolant from fan. Now that you have it off you may as well rebuild. I rebuilt one of these on my bench, actually two the first and last at same time.

How do you get it apart? I have tried everything under the sun to get the, (I think it's called a Gland), off. But it will not budge. It's brass and I'm afraid to damage this part. From what I can see from just a visual inspection is that the front gasket for the water pump bearing seal is missing a small section I can see nothing else wrong. The rest of the unit seems to be pretty tight. But I still would like to take it apart now that I'm this far to replace any other bad parts. Like I said this has to be the strangest water pump I think I have ever seen; alot of moving parts to do something so simple. The break down that I have of this unit shows some 27 diffrent parts to this water pump.

Russ, The piece your trying to remove is the packing nut I believe from your discription. It is threaded and can be removed by turning it counter clockwise with the pump clamped down to the bench or in a vise. Use a big channel locks and be easy with it. You said you had a noise in the pump you thought but check the generator also, sometimes that front bearing in the generator will get noisy and telephone noise thru the belt fooling some people. If you need more advice on it I have rebuilt several of those and will help you thru it . Email me directly at tkincaid65@hotmail.com See Ya Tim K.

Russ: It is some time since I had that one apart, the main thing I remember is that I will never take another one apart. The price of rebuilds only strenghtens my position.

I think that is my next step; take to a machine shop and let them look at it. I tried the local dealer (Case IH) in our area and they didn't want much to do with it as they are swamped with combines right now. They qouted me around $280.00 USD to rebuild it so I was hoping to get it done for less. Exspecialy since it's not my tractor. Thanks for your help.

Russ, Contact me about your repair and tell me what your pump. That price is terrible, and a machine shop will be worse.

Hope to hear from you, Tim K.
