I broke a chunk off the V flange of the pulley trying to get it off the crankshaft of my A. Will JB Weld be strong enough to withstand the tension of the fan belt or should I just go ahead and get a new pulley?

The A doesnt have one, theres no place to hook them up from factory. You could can put one by drill and taping a coolant pipe if you like, but there was none from factory.

When I shut it down, it showed 6.1V....I didn't see any bubbling @ top of battery...but, only ran it about 1/2hr.

If you can buy Problem Solver welding rods at a menards or some other place you can welkd it good as new. They come 4 to a pack for $3 and use about 80 amps. It will hold.

Here is my thought: Go on and do the JB Weld thing, then you can put the belts, fan, steering gear and bolster with the wheels back on, then the raditor and grill and the hood & muffler. Now it is at least 2 hours later and you are ready to give it a try.

RESULTS: 2 Days later it doesn't hold and you can start all over.

Now about two hours later you are back to square one and you only have four hours labor wasted. You go and get a new pully (about $20 to $40 from a salvage yard.)

It is time now to put the new pully on and spend another two hours putting everything back together AGAIN.

ASK YOURSELF: "WHAT IS MY TIME WORTH????? ???

Makes that new pully look really CHEAP

Re: Super MD valve recession spec? in reply to tractorsam, 03-07-2009 02:56:29
I never did see a spec for valve recession on that engine. Actually the early manuals on the D 236 and D 282 didn't have them eiether. Service bulletins were released later on for them as we started to run into starting and cleanup problems. It was very difficult for a dealership to get engineering specs on anything until warranty claims start piling up on a particular problem. I would have to rely on an experienced machine shop to have some specs.

Brad: It depends..... I needed to repair the bore of the driven pulley on a hydraulic pump, and I used JB weld to do it--so far, it's been 2 years without any problems. On the other hand, high-stress applications may not hold up. The key (like most repairs) is surface prep. If I were you, I'd try it--the most you'll be out is a tube of JB weld, provided that you don't hook up the biggest implement you have and flog it to death before making sure it will hold.
