6 volt question

I don't know a lot about 6v positive ground tractors. All the tractors I have are 12v or have been converted. I'm looking at a 53 SC 6v positive ground. It's been sitting for about 8 months without running. I put in a brand new 6v battery and spun the engine over by hand to make sure it was still free. It spun alright so I tried spinning it over with the starter and it cranked slow. Pulled the plugs out and it spun over very easily. Put the plugs back in and it cranks slow again. It's sparking but it won't start. I'd say the gas is too stale. Oh, the battery terminals are getting hot, but they are snug. Is the starter going bad that it isn't cranking very fast? Thanks!

Joe, If your ends are getting hot imaging how hot the brushes are inside the starter rubbing against the armature. Have your starter checked at a reputable shop. You won't believe the difference and when you replace your cables go to Napa they have the right ones, at least our Napa here in Geneseo ,Illinois does.

See Ya, Tim K.

If the terminals are getting warm that is a good sign you need to get better ones. They should be 1ga. Sometimes 1ga are hard to find. clean the ground connection to the tractor i am assuming that you cleaned the ones on the battery end.

Those replacement battery cable ends usually create more problems than they solve, I refuse to use them.

Hugh's right on the money. Get it adjusted ASAP. Both the I&T manual and the owner's manual will have the procedure.

Joe: Your cables are the problem right now. Get some cables made up with 1 gauge wire and soldered on ends. I find the best place to go is heavy truck repair shops. They are using 1 gauge on those big diesels with 12 volt.

I have resurected a lot of batteries and starters on gas Farmalls just by installing new 1 gauge wires. Many people think, oh it's only a small cubic inch gas engine, what they forget is it's also 6 volt. Too many of them have had replacment battery cables from auto parts store that are just too light.

They show up once in a while on ebay.

What would be wrong with a C-294 or C-295 2 bottom plow? More of those out there and they do a wonderful job.
