Farmall A not charging

I just had my Farmall A restored and converted to a 12V system. Well I never looked at the ammeter to see if it was charging, and one day this week I tried to start it and the battery was dead. So I crank started it and it started fine, but the meter was reading discharge. Anyway it was getting dark and I needed to use the lights which worked fine at first but got dimmer and dimmer until they finally were useless. All the guy that restored it did was put a 12V battery and 12V lights and voltage regulator in it and said this would work, but now I'm not so sure? Can anyone give me any tips cause I wanna get it fixed right. Thankyou for any input. Mark R.

Mark, Had a similar problem after restoring. My nice new shiny paint acted as an insulator and I never had a ground for my regulator so scraped off paint to bare metal for a ground at reg mount. Have your generator and regulator checked and then use an ohm meter to confirm correct wiring and for a ground. My 2 cents. Good luck.

Depends on what kind of altenator he used (one wire or 3 wire with an internal regulator) or one with an external regulator. You can take it off and take it to your local auto parts store and they can put it on a machine to make sure it has output. Then you know its not a burned out diode inside. There is an article on YT by Bob Melville on step by step 12 volt conversion for the farmall M that is excellent. Also has a good diagram. Good Luck

Another 12v conversion gone sour. Got to have a 12v generator and which are you using for ground. Which regulator is it for pos or neg ground? Need to wire ammeter correct for the ground you are using.

Thanks to both of you for responding! I'm not sure if I've got + or - ground, but I think the first thing I'm gonna do is get the generator to be 12V. The generator is the original with a voltage regulator screwed on to the top of it. Well I got to call a place in my area now and see if they can help. Thanks again! Mark

If you still have the original gen have it checked out then get the correct reg for that generator and 6v battery. There is no reason for going to 12 on a farmall A. 6V is more than enough just clean all connections and use good cables 1ga are what you need. Use pos ground what are the DELCO numbers on the back of your generator? The last three determine which regulator you will need unless your original cutout is good.

Just check and see which post of the battery is hooked to the frame. Thats ground. To find the articles in YT just click on articles in the left box and scroll down to "A step by step...
