I am working on a friend 1940 Farmall M. The clutch does not work. Will someone tell me the easiest way to inspect the clutch assembly without splitting the tractor. I have read Kelly' information on the Model H, but not sure the two tractor are configured the same. I believe from looking at this tractor the lift pump can be lowered for clutch inspection, but not sure. I do not have the manuals. Thanks in advance Dave

Remove the belly pump (Lift All unit) and you will be able to look right up in there and see the clutch. You can remove the clutch through that opening too. Be careful with the belly pump removal. It is heavy and can do some serious damage if it falls on you or anything else. I used 3/8 inch threaded rods, replacing the bolts one at a time with the rods and then lowered the pump down by threading nuts down the rods. Make sure the rods don't unscrew out of the holes. Also, the coupling between the counter shaft and the liftall shaft is a "cross" coupling and one of the crosses must be vertical to let you lower the pump. The coupling just slides out of the slot in end of the shaft. Actually not the end of the shaft, but a coupling half that is threaded onto the shaft (both the countershaft and the Lift All shaft ends have this threaded part. If you need instructions on removing the clutch, I think I have a write up on file for that, so let me know if you need it. Getting that clutch out is bit of a puzzle and you have to do things in the correct order.

Haas:
Thanks for the extra information. I am an AC Collector and although I used and ran Farmalls as a kid growing up in Iowa. I have very little experience repairing Farmalls. I restored a Cub a couple years ago, but this Super M is a bit different. I will probably have to lean on you for more information as I proceed though inspection and repair. Thanks Again Dave
Thanks also to RUSTYFARMALL for your quick reponse. I was able to start the disassembly.

Dave, I was not aware you are talking about a Super M. You can't remove the clutch through the bottom on a Super M. The Super M has a 12 inch clutch whereas the M is 11 inch. The larger clutch is too big to get out the bottom. You have to split the tractor. However, you can still do an inspection from the bottom.

Haas:I have removed the Lift pump and the race that the throw-out bearing is on, is all eaten up. What is that part? While I am in there we are going to replace the clutch plate and pressure plate, throw-out bearing. Do you have a recommendation, where we can get all these parts. Some place that is reasonable and reliable. Would you know the part #s? Any Help would be appreciated. Do you have an E-mail Address? Best Regards Dave Carney

I presume you have a regular Super M and not an M-TA. The M-TA is a bunch different. I think the part you are talking about is called the Sleeve, clutch release. It is the part the clutch release bearing (throwout bearing) is mounted on. The bearing is pressed onto it. If it is ruined, you likely had a frozen up throwout bearing and the bearing turned on the part, which it is not supposed to do. The part is round with two "ears" on it that mate with the clutch release fork. I think I may have one in my parts stock that I could sell you. May have some other M clutch parts too. The parts CD says the throwout bearing is an Aetna 880. What I do with clutches, is take them out and go to a clutch shop and have them rebuild them for me. They will reface the clutch plate and rework the pressure plate as needed at a cheaper price than buying new or rebuilt parts. Of course that is assuming your parts are rebuildable. The shop I use usually has the throwout bearings in stock. I have provided my Email address, so please send me an E mail and maybe I can provide some of the parts you need.

There is very little if any differance between a H and an M, the parts are a little bit bigger on an M, but the procedure is the same, and the clutch can be replaced without splitting the tractor. Be very cautious with the belly pump, it is very heavy.
