Just need some opinions. We have an M that will require either an aftermarket 3pt or a front loader for snow removal. Which way would you go. We do have power steering.

I have plowed snow in Western NY for over 20 years with a straight M useing a back blade and 3 point hitch. Every time I back up plowing, I wished I was plowing forward. I have 15.5 loaded tires with 1 plate on each wheel so I am able to push what-ever I have to but its not the funnest way to remove snow. But, if I had a choice, I would rather plow snow (foward) with a snow plow that I could angle then with a fixed blade like on a loader, especially on a long driveway.
Good Luck

Get a heavy-duty loader, remove the bucket, and obtain or make a blade for the front of it. I made a blade that's 8' wide and 40" high about 25 years ago, and have used my M and SM to push snow that most people thought I couldn't go through. Set the blade about 2" off the ground, put it in 3rd or 4th gear, and with fluid in the rear tires you can push a lot of wet heavy snow. If you want the best of both worlds, hang a 3pt blade on the back for weight and for cleaning up the corners.

I've got an M with a Farmhand F11B loader. It's dug me out at least twice a year for five years. I live in Colorado southeast of Denver about 50 miles, so I don't bother unless the snow gets over about a foot deep because it'll usually melt away in a few days. The last time was in March, 36" with 6 foot drifts, took all day to dig out 600 feet of driveway.

However! Without live hydraulics and powersteering you'll get one heck of a workout! Your left leg will be numb, and your arms will ache.

BobM had a picture of his M (I think) with a really slick bracket on the front so he could use a snowplow like on pickups. Maybe he could post that again? You really need a blade that will angle so you don't have to "load it out" off the driveway.

Yeah Pat - that was my SM with the plow frame…punch below for a photo. Don't have a photo with the blade mounted. But it fits on same as a pickup plow and is lifted by a hyd cylinder. (The cylinder mounts where the wreath is in the photo)

BTW your advice for an angling plow is good - I typically angle mine on the 2nd hole to the right to cast snow to the side. …Bob M

Those two gauges are telling you the same thing. Most likely you have a problem with the oil pump.

I gotta agree with Glenn - unless you're cramped for space so you gotta pile snow, a simple front blade on an M makes an excellent low cost snow pusher. However also as Glenn suggests tire chains are a worthwhile investment unless your accumulations are about 6" or less at a time.

Incidentally this will be the 50th winter the Super M I now own has been blading the white stuff here in snowy western NY...

I have a Farmall M with a straight blade on the front and it works great. I would suggest you get a good set of chains though, and then you will be amazed at how much snow you can push. Just in case your wondering I live in central Pennsylvania and we can get some nasty winters here like we did last year

I'll have to agree with the others, a front loader is the only way to go, plus, if you get a lot of snow this winter, and start running out of anyplace to push it to, with the loader you can just keep piling it higher.

I'd have to agree with Chas. K., go with a loader. I've got one I'm willing to part with if you're interested. I'm in E. Central Illinois, about 40 miles SW of Terre Haute In. E-mail me if you're interested.

To the "Classified Ad Police", I'm just offering, not advertising. I know where the classified forum is. ;<)

Just my opinion, but judging from the up-front labor involved, a front end loader would be the way to go. Many can be found, and there would be no major modifications to the tractor required. I live in IA and just picked up a loader for my H for $100. Seals leak a little, but it goes up and down!!

third party image

My first winter with my loader (Last Year) I was so excited. Until I got so stuck I couldn't make it to the driveway. Liquid in rear tires too.

Local farmers eventually plowed us out with a JD 9000 series and a blade or something monsterous like that.

You need a set of rear tire chains, also, did you know that you can use the hydraulic bucket to work your way out of predicaments like that one?
