Generator Difference: H and BN

I was graciously given a Generator from an H to use on my BN. Th only thing that looks different is th pulley. It was mentioned that there may be differences between a cutout regulator, and a voltage regulator. These two generators look identical....same number and location of termainals on the regulator...two on one side, one on the other. Does that mean they are the same?

Any help would be appreciated.
Take Care
Steve

They are not the same check out the numbers on the plate then go with the correct regulator. The outputs are different as the one for the H will put out more current. Ihave the DELSO REMY listings andmost places will list two regulators make sure you get the right one for your gen If you need more info send an E-mail

Steve - Far as I'm aware the generators are identical between the H and the B/BN except for the drive pulleys, and the pulleys should swap. Also it doesn't matter whether the BN is equipped with a cutout or regulator - the generator will work fine on either system.

Note to rustyfarmall: The later (voltage regulator-equipped) lettered series Farmalls continued to utilize 3 brush generators. The only difference is the 3rd brush on the some of the later units was fixed - i.e. there was no adjustment provision for the 3rd brush.

Thank you Bob M. for that info. I have had the generator on my 40 H apart, and learned all about the third brush setup from that experience, but have not had any trouble with the generator on my 50 H. I have rebuilt generators from 50s and 60s cars, and they had only 2 brushes so I assumed the tractors were the same.

Interesting observation! My first vehicle was a '51 Chevy P/U. It was equipped with a 2 brush generator, as was my father in law's '54(?) IHC. I've long wondered why the tractor mfr's continued with 3 brush generators several years after the automakers had switched to the more modern (and higher output) 2 brush units.

Years ago I mounted a generator which had the cutout mounted on top (off an older C) to my 50 C which had the regulator under the generator. As a matter of fact it is still on it 30 years later. I simply put the screws in the holes where the cutout was and everything worked. I believe you should be able to simply change the pulleys around and be fine, but maybe someone else will have other experiences.

If either generator has the cutout relay mounted to the generator, that generator is a 3 brush unit. If it uses a remotely mounted regulator, it is a 2 brush unit. I do not know if they will interchange.

I have read your's and Bob M's posts above. The generator on my C has an adustable 3rd brush and the voltage regulator below the generator. Where it gets confusing is in the operator's manual where it says the 3rd brush generator has a cutout relay, but does not say that the generator with a voltage regulator has an adjustable 3rd brush, unless I misread something. As you indicated, the pictures show the cutout relay on the generator and the voltage regulator below the generator.
