IH1086 question

The behavior of my IH1086 is starting to trouble me. Everytime I press in the clutch with a load on the machine, the clutch seems to engage properly but after a split second there is a jerk and a awful metallic "thud" that comes from the rear-end. If I press in the clutch while going down hill or under no load, I don't seem to hear or feel the problem. Again, the clutch seems to be engaging just fine but something has to be amiss.

I'm almost scared to ask but would anybody know what might be going on and how to fix it?

Thanks for your help,
Chad

chad, Sounds to me like your TA is starting to go out. My 966 would do the same thing....@ high idle while plowing or shredding, Step down on the clutch, ...get a metalic thud or slap sound. I will bet also, it will slip while under load. Sound like a $2500 to $3500 clutch/TA job. Good Luck,
John A.

Oh yeah, and one other little problem I noticed the other day when I was doing some baling was that when I would pull the PTO lever in the cab to start the PTO, the tractor would hesitate for a few seconds before it would engage.

There have been a few posts lately about PTO's not working. Does this sound like a similar problem?

Again, thanks for your help.

Chad

we've got a 786. all i can figure out is the 86 series pto is held engaged by oil pressure, and it takes a few seconds to build the pressure, which also helps engage the pto smoothly, our 1566 does the same thing. I've found that pulling the lever halfway, the pto will start up, then pull it the rest of the way forward to lock it engaged works pretty well
