Farmall C Information

In a round of horse trading I ended up with a good
running Farmall C. I need to know where to check
the fluids in the transmission, rear end,
hydraulics, and PTO. I also need to know where to
drain and fill them and what oil to use in each.
I bought a IT manual and it shows everything but
what I need to know. Thanks for helping me out.
Rodney

Also, don't forget to lube the fan hub. Rotate the fan hub screw hole to the 3:00 position facing it towards the right of the tractor. Remove the screw and fill with 30w engine oil. Should top this off at least every year.

Don't forget to lube the throwout bearing on the left side near the clutch housing. Remove the small round plug and look for the grease fitting straight in. Lube it with a couple pumps of chassis grease.

Steering should be checked every so often too. Although, I have never done it. I think you have to remove the grill shell to do that. It is not that difficult, I have just never got around to it yet.

Good luck!!!

Thanks so much for the information.
I will order the operators manual, but the information I got will get me started.
The tractor did not run and I towed it home.
I rebuilt the carb, put plugs, points, cap, wires,
and just general maintenance. I hit the starter and the thing runs like a swiss watch. And as a
bonus everything on it works. That is a first.
This is my first red tractor to own, I take my
baths in green paint. I guess I will have to mix in a little red.
Thanks so much for the information, and hope your day goes well.

Peabody gave excellent instructions for the transmission. The hydraulic unit has a plug on the left side of the unit. It is supposed to be about 1/2" below the opening. It takes less than 1 gallon of hytran fluid. The drain plug is right below the fill plug. Becareful. There can be pressure build up in there. Learned the hard way. Loosen the fill plug, wiggle it a little to make sure there isn't pressure. The screen is on the same side as the fill/drain plugs. Just 4 bolts to take it out. Need to loosen the steering to get it out. The oil takes 6 quarts. Should have two petcocks on the left side of the pan. One is for the low mark and the other for the high mark. There are at least a thousand and one opinions on the brand and weight of the oil. What ever you are happy with. The most important thing is to change it regularly. Enjoy.

Oops. Forgot to address the hydraulic unit. Yeah, I got a hydraulic oil bath one time by pulling the drain plug while the unit was still warm. Still don't understand why they didn't vent those darn things.

I think that I would have qualified for America's Funniest Home Videos if someone would have had a movie camera running when I pulled that drain plug out. I must have quite a puzzled look on my face. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I'm guessing that I won't do that again. Thanks for the chuckle first thing in the morning. Randy

The transmission, rear end & PTO fluids are all the same. Fluid is added through the hole in the deck with a plug in it between the clutch & the gear shift. Capacity is 5 gallons, I believe. I use a 90wt oil. To check the level, standing behind the tractor, look on the right side of the rear end housing for a plug (not far below the deck). Remove this plug and add fluid until it comes out here.

You should really consider purchasing an owner's manual from Binder Books. It's amazing the stuff you learn from one that you "thought" you knew.
Good luck with the C. I bet you got the better end of the horse trade.
