Hi guys My grandfather has a 51 H and a 41 M that I would like to restore in the near future. I never worked on tractors much so I really don't know what I am doing but I'm going to give it a shot. Here are my questions: 1. The H was badly leaking oil from the rear seal. We split the tractor and replaced the seal as well as all of the little gaskets that are in that area. I took the top and bottom pieces that the rear seal lies in to a machine shop and had the surfaces ground. We put everything back together and when the tractor heats up, it still leaks a fair amount although not as bad as it had. What else can I do to stop it from leaking? 2. Fifth gear has a rattle in it and the shift lever seems awful sloppy, especially in reverse. I haven't tore into the transmission yet but can anyone give me any hints / suggestions as to what may need replaced / repaired? 3. The ammeter is showing a slight discharge when the tractor is running. It is still the original positive ground six volt system and I just replaced the battery. What should I check?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Make sure the amp meter is not wired backwards. Did you try polerizing the generator? To polerize the gen. If your looking at the voltage regulator you need to get a jumper wire and touch the bat terminal to the gen terminal just tap the the jumper wire on the terminals youll see a little spark. You should also make sure the gen terminal on the voltage regulator goes to the armature side of the generator.

We put everything back together and when the tractor heats up, it still leaks a fair amount although not as bad as it had. What else can I do to stop it from leaking? I don't worry too much about a little leak. Oil is cheap.
2. Fifth gear has a rattle in it and the shift lever seems awful sloppy, especially in reverse. I haven't tore into the transmission yet but can anyone give me any hints / suggestions as to what may need replaced / repaired? A lot of the shifters get loose where the pin holds the lever in the case. there is a round bushing that the pin goes through. sometimes you can replace the pin and or the bushing. if the hole in the case is worn you can drill it out and use a larger pin.
3. The ammeter is showing a slight discharge when the tractor is running. It is still the original positive ground six volt system and I just replaced the battery. What should I check? Is it distributer or magneto? Does the battery run down? the ammeter could be wired in backwards.

Thanks for the info.
In response to #3, yes the battery runs down and the tractor has a distributor. I'm going to check the wiring when I go back home this weekend.
thanks again
