140 Starter trouble?

Does anyone know the best way to test the starter on a 140? It has a new battery, but the starter won't turn. My uncle even hit it with a reversed 12 volt jump. It started a couple of times; since then 12 volts will only turn it once every two or three seconds. The starter switch appears to be worn uqite a bit. Could this cause the problem? I am new to tractors, and any help is appreciated.

Tim & Hugh - Thanks for the help. I am going to get new 1 guage cables made, and have the starter rebuilt. The cables on it now are terrible, and my uncle tried to jump it with one cable to ground and the other right on the starter switch terminal, so I think it is a combination of troubles. Thanks again.

Keep us posted on your results I would like to know how you make out. Having the starter rebuilt now is a good decision. Who knows how long somebody has held the button trying to make it start. Never engage it for more than 15 seconds as it will start to build up heat. Good Luck. Tim and Bryton Kincaid ps. Hugh mentioned your cables and he is right , bad cables are bad news...

Take your starter off and have a reputable starter shop go thru it. After years of service the armature can become warped and the brushes make poor contact. You won't believe it when you get it back.. It should be about 90.00 to rebuild it, about 40.00 cheaper if the drive is ok.. Trust me I have had several done for my customers and it is well worth it. They can undercut the armature and make it like new.. See Ya, Tim K. Farmalls Forever!!!!! !!

Tim: You may well be right, I will not argue with that. However if those cables are not up to snuff, all the rebuilds going may not improve a thing. I tend to look and make sure the cheaper fix is not overlooked.

I had a 6.2 Chevy diesel, and those starters were notorious for going bad. I replaced the battery cables with 1 gauge, which is substancially heavier than original equipment and that cured the problem.

John: My guess is your battery cables are too light. Is the tractor still 6 volt? If so you need 1 guage cables and soldered on ends.
