Can anyone shed a little light on how engine r.p.m.s correlate to p.t.o. r.p.m.s? In other words, if my M has 540 rpm at the pto, and the engine is running at the rated 1595 rpm, how will the rpms of the pto respond when I increase the speed of the engine by tinkering with the governor? I am using a hand held tach on the power take off shaft, and want to increase the speed of the engine, but I don't want to go too far.

Actually, Your PTO engine RPM is 1450, not 1595. And the PTO rpm is something like 537 RPM at that 1450, so the ratio is 2.7 to 1. The PTO is a direct drive from the engine so the pto speed will directly change as engine rpm changes, always at the 2.7 to 1 ratio. St Your 1595 maximum no load engine speed Your pto turns 590 rpm. It's all explained in Your Operator's manual.

The maximum no load engine speed is where I will be making my tests, and no, it's not in the manual, because I.H. did not want the operator tinkering with the governor to get more speed out of the tractor.

measure your pto speed, multiply by 2.7, and that is your engine rpm. If you wanted pto speed from your engine speed, divide it by 2.7. My bigger concern is did IHC balance these engines well enough to go much over that, and are the valve springs strong enough to keep the valves from floating? Thats territory i'd rather not explore with my own machine, let alone my own pocketbook.

PTO speeds at low idle; at max rpm, full load; and max rpm, no load are given on page 90 of your operator's manual, the factor is 2.7 as Dr. Evil said.

He has NO IDEA how many times I've read the operator's Manual for Dad's '51 M in the last almost 50 years,..... And the one for the '39 H, '54 Super H, 450, and all the boxes of Manuals I brought home with Me My last day of work at FARMALL in 1981. Where I used to BUY the Operator's Manuals included with the new tractors! from Harvester Press in Westmont, IL. I have a pretty good idea what's in them.....

The PTO is about 33% of the engine.
