I just purchased an International 340 utility tractor with gas engine, serial number 2358. I think this makes the tractor a 1958?
The engine threw a rod and broke a piston. I don't know the extent of the collateral damage, but I was wondering what my best engine options and
sources (I am in New England)are, i.e. used, rebuild mine, or buy rebuilt. Also,
is the diesel engine option from these tractors a direct bolt-in or too much trouble to mess with?
Finally, the tractor is in ok condition for its age with a Lords front loader and
backhoe attachment, what would be a fair price to pay assuming only the engine issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First have your engine inspected for damage, especially to the block and crankshaft. If damage to the block is found, I would suggest finding a 340 Utility in a tractor salvage yard, buy the engine, and have it overhauled. There were many small changes to that family of engines over the years, so it is very important that you find a C-135 out of a 340 Utility. Diesel was an option, but they built very few 340 Diesels, so you will have a hard time finding the D-166 engine, then you need to make all of the changes to the tractor- fuel tank and lines, throttle linkage, glow plug push button and wiring, I think the exhuast comes out the other side of the hood, the list goes on and on.
