I have a 1971 farmall 656 gas n/f gear drive, and it appears that it came from the factory with no t/a.was this common on the 656, are there many around with no t/a? it does have fasthitch and dual hydraulics. Also what size plow and disk was the tractor designed for from the factory? should it have a parking brake because i can't find one on mine? thanks for any advice...

Yup , TA was an option --all the way back to the SMTA (i have one -and know of another)..... ..300's (without TA) are the only one that i've ever seen very many of though

you dont really need the t/a, although 1st gear is pretty fast compared to a lot of other tractors. we have a sept 71 gas model w/ ta.
we've pulled 3-18s auto reset semi mount plow in 3rd gear. it will pull a 9.5 foot discbine pretty well in 2nd, maybe 3rd. it will also pull a field chopper in corn, one row, with a barge box--newer 12ton + wagons get too to be too much of a load. at full load we've done no worse than 4 gallons per hour...and in that hour you get a lot done with it.

other answers are pretty much right on. i've heard a lot of the gas engines weren't quite right from the factory though, but ours has been really good with near 6000 hours on it.

The TA was always just an option. Our 706 dosen't have one, and the guys down the road once had a 1206 with no TA. Those are about the only two I've ever seen without the TA. The parking brake on your 656- See that rod sticking up from the right side of the operator's platform? Kick the brake pedals down and pull up on the rod. Remove your foot from the pedals, let go of the rod. The pedals should now be locked down. To release, just give the pedals a good kick, and they should come back up. I have read in IH manuals that you need to push the rod down as you kick the pedals to release on some 544/656/666/686 tractors, but our 686 released with just a kick of the pedals. You need to be careful to remember to release the pedals after parking, it's easy to forget, the tractor will still drive, and it will wear the brakes out very fast.

John: I would think a 656 without TA would be quite rare although there were some parts of country where TA was not very well accepted. Your looking at pulling a 4x14 or 16 plow and 40 blade disk quite well. The park brake latch should be right down near your right heel when sitting in seat. It is just a latch that holds brake pedals down. The gasser was quite a heavy drinker, and I understand didn't measure up to the diesel on hp. I had a diesel, most efficient tractor I ever owned.

The part of S.C. where I grew up was such a place. I don't remember ever seeing a TA on a tractor after the 460/560. I had thought that they quit making them; I guess Dad and Willis just got so tired of fixing them for farmers who wouldn't keep them adjusted that they just quit ordering them.

We have a 656 gas and while ours has the T/A not all of them did and there was a kit, at one time, that removed the T/A.

We pull a 4X14 semi mounted steerable plow and a 14 foot disk with ours, but don't use it much for field tillage anymore.

I don't think they had a park brake, just put it in gear after shutting it off.
