Have several questions on 350 maintaince. Has anyone restored a 350 U? How do you remove the bar with springs on the front of the fan mount, and what does it do? The original hydraulic system is not being used. Is it OK to run with no fluid? Will it damage anything with the distributer? Thanks, Allen

Hi Allen, I assume the bar your talking about is the one right on the shaft through the fan hub. It has a wedge bolt down through one side. It may be hidden in dirt and grease (ussually are). Clean of the bar and locate the nut on the side and remove and drive out the bolt (CAREFULLY) and the bar should be able to be pulled off. This bar is what actually drives the water pump, the fan hub is on a spindle like a truck hind wheel, the bar drives the shaft through the center which the water pump impeller is on. Running your hydraulic system without oil will damage the pump, possibly even cause the pump to seize. If the pump were to seize that would damage you timing gears, costly!

RE: reply from parts man. My 350 U hydraulic pump is mounted on the front and driven by a shaft connected to the bottom pully. The system with the tank under the seat is not being used. If I cap off the unused hydraulic lines at the pump and fill the pump with oil will this keep the pump from seizing up and damaging the distributer? Would it be better to connect the lines with a bypass at the pump? Your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Allen

Allen, if you block the passages at the pump it will build up pressure and have no place for it to go. This will either strip timing gears or split the pump. If you run a line from one port to the other add a reservoir so when the oil heats up there will be room for expansion. If you don't plan to use the system under the seat just leave it hooked up and running through the original way and take the handle off the valve on the side.
